Background

The Brother’s Marconni

Raised in a puritan Sigmarite household, twin brothers Andres and Marcus were taught to uphold the traditions and law of Sigmar. To this end their father, Alessandro Marconni, sent them to train as warrior priests with their uncle, Belthazar Marconni, an Arch Lector from Ostland.

For the course of their young lives, Andres and Marcus became hard workers and soon grew above the expectations of their uncle. However, this would not always be the way. During their teenage years, their discipline wavered. Not content to work and study at the monastery, the young men would go off into the local town looking for trouble. Although their hijinks were not without moderate success (they ‘arrested’ several witches and cultists during various adventures), they ended up enraging their uncle. Feed up with their tomfoolery, Belthazar throw them out of the monastery.

Now without a purpose or guidance, the now 20 year old boys set out to find their way in the world. They journeyed from town to town hiring themselves out to merchant and magistrate a like. Anything from catching rats, to hunting down witches.

During a mission to find a missing girl, they found themselves on the now ruined remains of Mordhiem. They had tracked the girl to the outskirts of the city. Not one to miss an opportunity to test themselves, the brothers ran in search of the girl (and more importantly adventure!).

After two days of slaying the odd ratman or ghoul, the brothers still could not pick up the girls track. Suddenly they found themselves surrounded by what appeared to be a necromancer and a group of skeletons. Outnumbered and tired from their searching, the brothers thought their time had come. Then from a distance a loud crack was heard. The back of the necromancer’s head exploded in a shower of blood. Then the sounds of dogs and voices soon followed as a group of witch hunters came over the top of a ruined building.

Once the battle was fought and one the brothers found out that the witch hunters had located the girl on the outskirts of the town and sent her on her way, they had picked up their trail shortly after and followed it to their current location. The leader of the witch hunters, Tyrus McCarthy, offered to take the boys with him, as his last warrior priest had meet a rather unfortunate end.

For the next 10 years the brothers trained with Tyrus, learning the way of the witch hunter and using their new found talents in combination with their warrior priest skills.

Lord Feron

Lord Xerbraxis Feron was a high ranking lord from the province of Ostland. So strong was his favor, the Elector Count of Ostland Valmir von Raukov, often used him for more delicate situations. During the storm of Chaos, Feron and his men were at the forefront of the battle, leading a powerful counter attack against the rampaging hordes that threatened the Empire.

Feron and his men fought valiantly against the forces of Chaos right until the end of the campaign, after which Valmir von Raukov awarded Feron with one of the highest honors bestowed upon the people of Ostland, the Emperors Bull, a small relic going back centuries.

Once returning to his manor, Feron was meet with a horrifying site. Where once stood his great manor now lay a molten mound. And around the remains, zombies and skeleton shambled around the grounds. Once dispatching the undead filth, Feron found a few survivors hiding in a shed just outside the property.Feron was to later learn that during his absence, a young girl in their hire had been found to practicing witch craft. Upon her discovery, she set upon the members small band of zombies. The entire household was wiped out. Including Feron’s wife and son.

Completely enraged, Feron lead his veteran knights on a mission to hunt down the necromancer. For months they searched in vain throughout the provinces of the empire. Finally their journey brought them to Stirland. Here on the borders they meet up with a band of witch hunters, who themselves, were in search of a group of necromancers.

Combining their forces, Feron and the leader of the witch hunters, Tyrus, lead an assault through the province of Stirland looking for them. Obiviously enraged by the people of Stirland rallyed against them. Frustrated with the situation, Feron approached Alberich Haupt-Anderssen the Elector Count of Stirland. A deal was brokered between them they they could pass through Stirland, provided they did not engage any of the local populace, in exchange, Feron and his men had a month to do their investigating before leaving, forcefully if need be, Stirland. Feron and Tyrus split their forces in search of a trace of the necromancers, both parties were to eventually meet in Sylvania, as they had assumed they would travelling that way. 20 days later on the borders of Sylvania, they reunited, they were now within reach of their prey, A days travel later they found the coven of witches and slaughtered them. Much to Ferons dismay, the girl who had betrayed him was not to be found.

The Marconnian Inquisition

After returning to Ostland with Tyrus and his group, they visited with Valmir von Raukov. After many months a deal was made with Volkmar the Grim and the Emperor Karl Fanz to create witch hunter army. They would have the rights and abillity to enter any province to hunt witches and heretics provided they did not interfere with the local populace, nor would they be able to abuse their powers to take control of a region. Now Feron had a purpose again, and joined with Tyrus, they would create an army purely designed to hunt down and destroy their enemy. And so began the Marconnian Inquisition.

Ostland

Ostland's state colors are black and white and its symbol is the bull, and a bull’s head is a very common motif on banners and shields. Its capital is the city of Wolfenburg. The province of Ostland is one of the least hospitable in The Empire. Dense forest covers much of it; the desolate Middle Mountains making up the remainder. Its neighbours are Talabecland, Hochland, Middenland, Nordland and, in the north, the nation of Kislev. Not so far beyond Kislev is the Troll Country and beyond that, the Northern Wastes. As with all Empire provinces of the east, their remoteness, densely wooded (and therefore perilous) terrain isolates Ostland from the general flow of wealth and trade from the major centres in the west. As a result Ostland is poor and sparsely populated, its army smaller and less well-equipped than other states; yet its people are regarded as some of the toughest and most determined in the Empire.

The Forest of Shadows covers a huge area of the province; it is an eerie place filled with grotesquely-distorted trees and weird fungi. Orcs & Goblins, Beastmen, giant spiders, and worse monstrosities of Chaos proliferate here. The Middle Mountains, the highest point in The Empire, are a refuge for bandits and Chaos warbands, though it is also home to many Ogres. These Ogres often serve as mercenaries in Ostland’s armies, and are much respected and feared for their tremendous strength and ferocity. The fortress of Brass Keep is located in these mountains.

The villages of Ostland exist at subsistence level, and are notoriously inbred. It is a common joke in more sophisticated provinces that an Ostlander is more than likely his own uncle, though it would be unwise to say such a thing to his face. Ostland villages are more like large, extended families, and this closeness extends even to the larger towns. One of those villages is Sokh, close to the border with Middenland. What money does flow into the province comes from the fur trade, since Ostland is well supplied with game. Ostlanders have a tendency to squander any disposable income on expensive status symbols – ornate armour or impressive firearms being favourites (double-barrelled pistols and hunting rifles being very popular). As a result, they are very loathe to 'waste money' on hiring unreliable mercenaries – Ostlanders are self-sufficient above all.
